Using HalfLife TV

Together with the release of the Half-Life 1.1.0.8 patch Valve released their new Multicast Spectating technology. Also known as HLTV. HLTV is allowing hundreds of people to watch a live game of Counter-Strike, Half-Life or any other Half-Life MOD. 
To make it impossible for people on HLTV to cheat by telling in-game player positions Valve has made a delay between the game and HLTV. The default delay is 30 seconds. However this can be changed by a setting on the HLTV proxy with a minimum of 10 seconds delay. 

Since HLTV is a feature every gamer should be able to enjoy we have made this small manual to help people in using HLTV.

How can I connect to the HLTV server?

Entering the ip address of the HLTV server

Connecting to an HLTV server is very simple. All you need is the latest version of Counter-Strike. Simply start Counter-Strike, then click on "Play CS 1.3". Then click on "View Game". If you want to watch a random game click on "Update".

If you want to watch a specific HLTV Proxy server click on "Add IP". Half-Life will ask for the IP of the HLTV server then. Fill it in and click on OK.

The server will be added to the list. Click on the server and then on "View Game" to connect to it.

What can I do when I'm spectating a game?

Once your on the HLTV server you will be able to view the in-game players. By default you will be able to chat with the other spectators on HLTV. However this could be turned off by the HLTV serverowner. Valve made it possible for you to switch between players and the viewtype.

• Fire button:    Switch between players
• Jump button:  Switch between view types (Free look, in eyes, auto or map view)
• Duck button:   Switch the minimap on/off
• Back/forward buttons: Zoom in or out

You can configure these controls by going to the Half-Life main menu. Then click on "Configuration". Then click on "Controls". All the above controls should be in the list there.

Why are the teams not shown correctly when I join the HLTV server?

Shortly after connecting to HLTV, players appears to be in the wrong team in the scoreboard. And the icons are grey instead of red or blue. Just wait for a new round and everything should be correct.

How can I record a HLTV demo?

You can record an HLTV demo of the game you are watching. You can do that by typing: "record <demoname>" in the console.
